In the book, Beyond the Wheelchair: The Life of Sowon Quinn, Marie Schor uses interviews to reflect and retell the story of Sowon, a woman who suffered an unfortunate accident as a baby, which left her severely disabled.
The story begins with Sowon’s life in South Korea and her struggles as a child with special needs. Sowon’s immediate and extended family influenced her greatly, even teaching her to be an artist and how to read.
After Sowon’s family emigrated from South Korea to come to the United States, Sowon attended a Christian boarding school for the disabled. Soon the staff realized that Sowon was more than capable of attending the local high school, from which she graduated and attended college.
Through the lenses of family dynamics, the challenges of being an immigrant, and the difficulties of being severely handicapped, the reader gets a glimpse of how God shows up in this believer’s life.
About the Biographee
Sowon Quinn was born in South Korea. While still an infant, she was dropped on her head resulting in a neurologically based disorder – dystonia - that causes involuntary and contorting muscle spasms. Sowon had no formal education until she moved with her family to the United States as a teenager. At the age of 15, she finally attended a Christian boarding school for the handicapped, a local high school, and graduated from college. In spite of many challenges in her life, she continues to be an inspiration to many.

“This accomplishment was big for me. It showed me what I was capable of. There was only one problem: I didn’t know God then, so I thought I did it by myself.”
